Great food. Wonderful service. Upstanding environment. This is one of the few places I've seen the kitchen of and not been digested. Many places have obviously dirty kitchens and tables that aren't free of fingerprints and smudges. Geckos is a busy and popular restaurant that offers a personalized and custom experience. Food is fresh. All food is prepared on site and can be "made to order." In sum: clean, fresh, original, and friendly experience!

Not a fan of NOT offering endless chips and salsa! That alone will keep me from coming back. I found the shredded beef tacos to be flavorless and unseasons. Tasted like pot roast. If the chips didn't keep me away for sure the taco did! I don't know how to say this other than just saying it but all the servers there were Caucasian and young. Nothing about this place felt like a true Mexican restaurant besides the attempt to decorate it like you'd think a Mexican restaurant should look. I think it could benefit from having more Hispanic influence on staff to help guide its menu and add to the atmosphere. Mexican food and culture should be vibrant and flavorful. It was neither here.

Love it. Great place for big groups and families. Amazing service. Not authentic Mexican but still tasty.

I was looking for a great Mexican food and beer, I was highly disappointed. Would I recommend nope. The chips, salsa and food all very bland. It seems they went to the local grocery store and got all ingredients and put them together. Again highly disappointed....

The food was great, the ambience was good. It was honestly decent Mexican food for a decent price.

I was treated here to a farewell lunch recently and we had a lovely time. I didn't arrange...anything....I just showed up, but it sounds like it was pretty easy to get the private room, or whatever it's called, for our group. The didn't even make a comment when only about a third of the expected guests showed up! Nice, right? Service was good. Our server was accommodating and responsive. While we didn't have a huge group, she met our needs and took everyone's orders as they arrived, seeing as people trickled in some. Upon request, she offered the lunch specials menu. It offered multiple options, though they were non-adjustable and had no vegetarian friendly options. Fortunately, the larger menu at least offered the veggie burrito, which was fine. Ultimately, I feel that this restaurant offered large quantities of food for a modest price; however, quality wasn't great. The chips and salsa weren't notable, but they were at least present. It's hard to settle when you've experienced excellent Mexican home cooking. I have yet to find a restaurant in Utah that really meets that standard. Some close competitors, though. Gecko's was not one of them, though they are certainly a step or two above Taco Bell. If you haven't been before, you might have to make a U-turn like we did. It's in a little complex along with Zupas, though Gecko's is a stand alone building. It is visible from Jordan Parkway/10600 S., so if you miss your turn, and are paying attention, you'll know what to do. Still, I'd suggest looking elsewhere...it just isn't great. But for most people I know this would be a good option, I just have higher expectations when it comes to Mexican food.

I thought this place was okay. We got seated right away and were given chips and salsa. I'm pretty sure the chips are out of a bag and the salsa is from a jar that I could buy at Walmart. I got a veggie burrito that ended up being HUGE and I could only eat a third of it. The burrito has beans, cheese, olives, rice, sour cream, lettuce, and guacamole and was pretty good. It was quite heavy on the guacamole in some spots, but if you're a guacamole fanatic then maybe that's great. It's not one that reheats well though so maybe it would be one to share with a friend. The waitress was really nice though so that was nice and you just pay at the front when you're done. It is a little expensive if you're not ordering off of the lunch menu.

Just you're average Mexican food chain. Service was good. Food was bleh. Meats were all overdone and dry. Salsa seemed like it was pace picante. Everything was just...boring. Can't say I'll ever come back

My new favorite. Just went to lunch with some girlfriends. We love Mexican food. The chips were warm and the salsa tasty. We ordered the lunch special and the food came from the kitchen hot and attractive and tasted great. Only bummer is they don't serve beer but not their fault. Can blame Utah's ancient liquor laws. Anyway, the waitress was nice and friendly.

Love Gecko's. Always good service and good food. I'd suggest the chile verde burrito (it's my favorite) and ask for Ruth. Lunch specials are also affordable and quick.

I should just quit going to other Mexican food restaurants since the Red Iguana has spoiled everything else for me... I guess it's like going to a BBQ place after Oklahoma Joe's... This place is odd to say the lease... Odd location, odd set up and odd interior... but quaint. The food is average, the service is average & the Chili Verde was surprisingly good. Not great...but good. They had two different kinds and I must say the spicy hot one was yummy.... Boarder-line too hot, but I like it that way. Will I go back.... Most likely, no... But it was okay as far as Mexican food places in south valley...

Let me just start out by saying the owner of Café Rio is awesome. I've never met him but I've heard a lot of good things about him. I went to school with his daughter and she was an awesome person I'm sure she still is. The reason I'm giving this a three star rating is because the food is average. It's a little too Americanized. But the service was awesome and so is the owner even though I've never met them. But as far as quality of the food, it is okay.

I don't know why everyone hates Gecko's on here. Gecko's has the best burritos in Utah! The service is amazing, and I have no complaints about the food or the prices. You can tell that they use fresh ingredients, and that the owner spares no expense when it comes to quality food. The beans here are the best beans that I have ever had, and the tortillas are to die for. I get my burrito without enchilada sauce, So I can't say wether or not that is good. My favorite waitress Rochelle is no longer there, but everyone else is just as nice. The owner of the place is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. I highly recommend ignoring the bad reviews and trying it out for yourself. I hope that you won't regret it.

My wife decided to take me here, as she had been before and liked it. I must admit I wasn't thrilled. I usually love Mexican food, but it has to be good. The other big deal to me is "spicy". I love things spicy, and my wife, does not! So i could see why she likes this place, very bland. Food is ok. I had a chile relleno and verde, with a tortilla. I wasn't impressed. The service was good, the food came out fairly fast, but it just didnt have much kick for me, so I really wouldn't suggest it, unless you don't like spicy things!

  • Michael S.

No liquor license and I love a good drink with any spicy food, but then again it wasn't spicy and the food was just bad food. Nothing special. Nothing good.

I have been coming to Gecko's for years. Their food is very good! It's a great place to go for a quick bite as their food comes out very fast. Their lunch menu is very reasonable and you get a great big helping of yummy Mexican food. Love their guacamole.

Pros: The service is great! It's a locally owned restaurant, which is nice. The food is really yummy! For an appetizer the chili verde fries are so good. For main dishes our favorites are the burritos, chimichangas, and salads. And the Horchata and Jarritos are to die for! Cons: The inside decor is a little blah, some of the plates are a bit expensive for Mexican food, but you do get larger portions.

  • Aaron M.

Have been coming here for years, thank you, always great service and great food. Always fast and friendly. Great salsa, I usually get the pork burrito, or the fish taco's

  • Rodger B.

I have been here about 4 times. The last time, yesterday, will be my last time. The food has always been pretty mediocre, like the ingredients are straight off the Sysco truck. Last night, the meat -- chicken and pork -- was just downright awful. It tasted very, very cheap. I'd give the place 1 star but the service is friendly and pretty good. With as large a Latino population base as Utah has, you'd think the state would have a lot of good Mexican food options. Outside of Red Iguana and a few others, however, the Mexican food scene is very mediocre/average.

NOT good Mexican food. Not good, even for Americanized-over-MSG'd wannabe Mexican food. I've been here four painful times now (lunch and dinner), each time compelled by friends or co-workers who want to sway me for reasons I've yet to figure out. I've included a few of the reasons it hasn't worked thus far. - Their salsa tastes like semi-chunky tomato juice (unclear what the chunks are) - Tortilla chips are straight out of a cheap grocery store brand bag - The chips and salsa are not bottomless - they will charge you if you ask for refills - Tasteless enchilada sauce (how does one accomplish this?!) - They call themselves a *grill* and yet no menu items appear to be grilled - Verde sauce was virtually transparent and tasteless, too much water - Fish used in the Fish Tacos has a nasty gluey breading, akin to Gorton's frozen fish sticks - No beer! - Fried menu items arrive swimming in a plate of grease (and I'm not talking about a healthy olive dipping oil, kids) - The service, although semi-friendly, is confused and untrained at best (IOW, don't ask the 16 year old wait staff what's in the food) Did I mention how surprised (and subsequently disappointed) I was to see a Mexican restaurant - even in Utah - that doesn't serve cerveza.......??? Hope y'all like Mountain Dew with your tasteless grease. Word to the Management - if you're going to serve food this bad, it would be nice to allow your patrons to numb their taste buds with alcohol. Note: I'm not one who goes on and on about bad ambience and interior furnishings, but this place reaches a new low with decor. It's a dust-ridden plastic jungle in there. Bring a machete.

As soon as I walked in, I wanted to walk out! The jungle theme and dusty artificial plants gave me my first clue of what was to come. We were greeted and seated quickly and a moment later our chips and salsa were placed on our table by a very unenthusiastic waiter. I don't blame him for his behavior, however, because the place had the same effect on me. The chips were from a bag and the salsa came from a jar. Our food came out quickly, but was bland and lacked any authentic flavor. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone except Gordon Ramsey and Kitchen Nightmares

Man! Not a lot of love for this place, huh? I just got back from eating lunch there and, I gotta tell ya, I didn't hate it. I was pretty worried - and had really low expectations - after reading the other reviews and maybe that worked in Gecko's favor. They had lots of lunch specials at great prices and the service was prompt and attentive. We had a $25 gift certificate, so we opted to order off the regular menu, rather than the the lunch special menu. I got the shredded beef burrito, enchilada style and my friend got the shredded pork burrito. Both were good, not great. The meat was seasoned (lightly), juicy and tender. I liked the enchilada sauce. The rice and beans were both rather bland, but the salsa had a great flavor, so slathering it on everything really made the food POP. This is a nice place for lunch. Given the aforementioned lack of cerveza, vino and tequila, I probably wouldn't ever go to Gecko's for dinner. Grab yourself a 50% off gift certificate from citydeals.com and see if you agree with me.

If you have lived in Utah your whole life, or under a rock, you will like this place. This is a Mexican restaurant but the food was so bland, I was shocked. The shrimp and mango salsa tacos were ok but not enough to make me want to go back. Everything needed flavor. Don't really care about decor - it was clean and the service was good. The food no.. Really really no. This place doesn't serve alcohol in any form. I didn't particularly care - just FYI.

Holy crap. I thought this place wasn't just terrible, it was godawful. But let's be realistic for a second here, Utahns. Those of you giving Gecko's Mexican Grill FIVE stars are either touched in the head, or have been deprived all your life of decent cuisine that will raise your culinary bar a little bit. Even if I were to overlook the horrible service, polygamous atmosphere with fake plants, and lack of beverage selection, the food served here would rate two stars AT BEST. Want real Mexican food? Go anywhere but here.

Not Mexican food to blow your socks off, but its always been good. As a tip, go for lunch and order one of their lunch specials, they are really cheap.

We had a coupon, so we went. The food was fine. Not great, but not horrible. The strangest part of the whole dinner though was a woman sitting to the side of us. She stared at us the entire time. She didn't talk to the people she was with or make any movement to talk to us, just stared. Really strange. Anyway, the food was ok, but we will not be returning.

Love their food and salsa! Not super greasy like a lot of Mexican restaurants.

From the looks and the locale I had high expectations for this place. Even inside it was quite busy with plenty of families and groups of old folks having lunch. The prices seemed right, with some really good deals for the lunch specials. The smell was good and typical of a Mexican restaurant. But when the food came out it looked like it had been cooked by a 14 year old with minimal cooking experience. The ingredients were obviously of the lowest bulk foods quality and looked like they'd been thrown together by formula rather than designed to elicit any specific taste. Its like somebody took the joke to heart that all Mexican food is just meat, beans, cheese, and tortilla arranged in different combinations. The ingredients of the food were bland and the spices didn't make up for it. I got the feeling if I just took my fork and stirred it all around a few times I would have the makings of every other entree on the menu. Overall the quality of the food is better than Taco Bell and slightly better than Betos. But the price is on par with a low end restaurant so it's absolutely unacceptable. When I walk away from a restaurant I shouldn't have the standard "Taco Bell Regrets" and wondering what my odds for food poisoning is. Skip this low quality feed bag and hope the owners actually try the food that their employees are cooking and do something about it.

Tried Geckos recently........ Not impressed, the food was pretty bland, the service is bland and the atmosphere is bland. In a valley with so much good Mexican food it's a wonder they make it. I think it appeals to the 60 + crowd. I wouldn't recommend, too many better choices close by.

  • Jason F.

This place is really not that good. I think they try but any effort is overcome by laziness and complacency. Perhaps 20 years ago a Mexican restaurant like this might be able to thrive, but not today. The food is excruciatingly bland and tasteless. I had the shredded beef burrito and it lacked any flavor or creativity at all. The meat was chewy and totally tasteless. I think the cooks open the can of beans, the bag of lettuce, the container of cheese, and think they are going to make something someone will enjoy. In reality this just doesn't happen. No one in our group had a remarkable or even tasty food. It was all boring with bland cheese, bland rice, and bland meat. The interior of this restaurant is quite dated, harking back to the heydays of 1991. It seriously needs to news paint, new carpet, new booths. More importantly though it needs a new menu with new food. Skip this place and save yourself from being disappointed. Instead try one of the other thirty Mexican restaurants in the area that are better in almost every way.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
